The racing was tight at round two of the South Island Enduro series at Moa Flat, near Roxburgh on Sunday.

With early morning drizzle, turning to rain as the event progressed, conditions deteriorated rapidly. The steep, greasy hills with a bog thrown in every 500 metres for good measure kept the riders on their toes. The removal of the final expert section of the day was perhaps one of the biggest reliefs of my and no doubt many other riders lives.

All in all though, it was a great track and the Gore Motorcycle club did a fantastic job of running the event.

With round one winner Kelly Paterson retiring due to mechanical trouble, the field was left with a gaping hole which Mosgiel’s Jol Hennessey (Yamaha YZ250) was only too happy to fill.

Hennessey was edged out by local rider Gerald Turnbull (KTM 350SX) (pictured above) for the first enduro-cross style test win by just one second. Another local rider, Gore’s Jason Duff (KTM450EXC), tied for second place with Hennessey in what was shaping up to be a close race.

Terrain test two was again a nail biter, with Hennessey this time turning the tables on Turnbull, taking the win by one second. This time, Christchurch’s Chris Mexted (Honda CRF250R) emerged from the woodwork to claim a distant third spot.

Hennessey and Turnbull went into the third and final test tied for the outright win. It wasn’t to be though, as Mosgiel’s Hennessey took an emphatic final test win, posting consistently fast test times all day. That was enough to secure Jol the outright win from Turnbull and Duff.
